Month-long protests against the authoritarian government of Tunisian President Zine el-Abidine Ben-Ali culminated on Friday with Mr. Ben Ali’s departure from the country and a state of emergency. Mr. Ben Ali ruled Tunisia for more than two decades. During the weeks of protests, dozens of people were killed in clashes with police. His apparent overthrow is the first time in recent memory that mass protests have forced out an Arab leader. VOA’s Ravi Khanna reports.

Turkey, Syria’s neighbor and long-time ally, is now taking an active role in attempts to dethrone Assad. Ankara is backing Western actions, reportedly providing a base for training Syrian rebels and even discussing a no-fly zone with the US. Back in 2002 Turkey, strictly following its newly-designed “zero problems with neighbors” foreign policy, was engaged in building strong economic, political, and social ties with neighboring countries. Everything was going to plan until the Arab Spring hit the region. Turkey faced a choice: to maintain its policy of engagement with authoritarian Arab leaders, or to take a different path. And Syria became the country which felt the full force of Ankara’s policy u-turn when Turkey came out in support of Syria’s opposition and aligned itself with the country’s staunch enemy — the US. Turkey found itself in the frontline of the Syrian crisis last June when thousands of Syrians poured across its border, fleeing a government crackdown on the town of Jisr-al-Shughour. At the time, the Red Crescent said it was caring for 30000 refugees in camps just inside Turkish territory. Threats of the conflict spilling into Turkey caused Ankara to consider sending troops into Syria to create a buffer zone. In the event, it was not deemed necessary, but the tensions did not help relations between the two neighbors. Turkey claimed that the Syrian crisis could not be resolved through negotiations, that Bashar al-Assad could no longer be trusted, and

The Arab Spring has changed the dynamics of the Arab world and it also changed the dynamics between Arab media and the US – especially when it comes to Al-Jazeera. It wasn’t long ago that Washington was criticizing the TV network for running Osama bin Laden videos, for instance. But now the tune has changed with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praising the network and other alternatives to the mainstream. RT’s Annissa Naoui has more.

Hezbollah Secretary General Sayed Hassan Nasrallah’s Speech on June 24, 2011, in which he first confirmed 3 CIA spying cases within Hezbollah, and he talked about the link between the spies and the US Embassy. In addition, Sayed Nasrallah said that the Policy Statement of the new Lebanese government is unlikely to be delayed. The Secretary General also spoke about Israel’s recent “Turning Point 5″ drills, saying that these drills serve as proof that Israel is no longer capable of fast decivineness, and Israel is thereby admitting that its home front is officially under threat. Sayed Nasrallah also talked about Bahrain’s recent prison sentences for some of the Opposition figures, and to end, he addressed the current situation in Syria. TOZEUR Tunisia

Once traveled by caravan trains, the seemingly infinite horizons of the region’s salt lakes have remained unchanged. But on the edge of this lifeless world is the flourishing city of Tozeur. This small charming city in the southwest of Tunisia is surrounded by a beautiful and fertile oasis landscape, the Oasis of Djerid, the oasis of the palm branch. The Bled El Djerid Oasis features approximately 200000 palms and the dates that grow in this region, the Deglet Ennour, are considered to be among Tunisia’s finest. The provincial capital of Tozeur is famous for its unique architecture and the buildings in the old part of the city, the Ouled Halef, are particularly fascinating. Hidden in one of the sunlit inner courtyards of the old area of the city is a small, though extremely informative history and folklore museum that contains a large variety of Tozeur’s traditional and historical objects that stem from its dwellings, crafts and trade, some of which date back to Roman times. The historic townscape of Tozeur is still influenced by the unique architecture of the 14th and 15th centuries and even today its charming alleys and idyllic courtyards are an influential centre of both Arabic and Islamic culture. Travellers from all over the world can experience a large variety of unique and exotic architecture and all of the special ambience of this intriguing city. In the cool shade of Tozeur’s clay buildings, time is but a mirage!

Nafta, Tunisia

www.facebook.com/I.love.
